  22. 1 III.I WWHAT IS "BABY KEYS"?&~ , ____________________
  23. 1 If you own a computer and have a young child between 6 to 24 months of age,    
  24. 1 then you have probably noticed that he has a certain curiosity about that
  25. 1 strange looking box sitting on your desk. Children naturally have an
  26. 1 attraction to it and find the keyboard to be irresistible. It would be a
  27. 1 shame to let that interest and energy go to waste. This is where "Baby Keys"
  28. 1 comes in. When "Baby Keys" is running, all your child has to do is hit the
  29. 1 keys on the keyboard (this comes naturally). The computer will produce a
  30. 1 variety of sounds accompanied with graphical images that will capture her
  31. 1 attention (at least for a few minutes).
  32. 1 IV.U WCOMPATIBILITY&~ , _____________
  33. 1 "Baby Keys" will work with any IBM PC or true compatible (See WSYSTEM&    
  34. 1 WREQUIREMENTS&). However, users of the TANDY 1000-EX and 1000-HX computers may
  35. 1 have to place the following statement in their CONFIG.SYS file:
  36. m DEVICE=KEYCNVRT.SYS
  37. 1 This makes it possible for "Baby Keys" to recognize the keyboard used by    
  38. 1 these computers.
  39. 1 V.a WSYSTEM REQUIREMENTS&~ , ___________________
  40. 1 To run "Baby Keys", you need the following:
  41. m *1 82K (Kilo bytes) of free memory~   " ____    
  42. m *1 A Floppy or Hard drive system
  43. m *1 PC, MS or DR DOS 2.11 or above
  44. m *1 A HERCULES, CGA, MCGA, PLANTRONICS, EGA, or VGA graphics adapter.
  45. 1 VI.U WINSTALLATION&~ , ____________
  46. 1 To install BABY KEYS, simply type in the name of the self-extracting program    
  47. 1 BKEYS.EXE (If "BKEYS.EXE" is not available, then you should use the
  48. 1 "LHA.EXE" utility for extraction).
  49. 1 WOn a Floppy Drive System&    
  50. m Please make sure you have enough space on the disk that you wish to
  51. m install BABY KEYS on. Assuming that BABY KEYS is in your WA:& drive, you
  52. m would type the following: ~       J 4 WBaby Keys_ Copyright (C) 1991 - Multi Computing&~ , WA: <ENTER>&~ , WBKEYS <ENTER>&
  53. 1 WOn a Hard Drive System&
  54. m First create a subdirectory on your hard disk to contain the BABY KEYS
  55. m files. Type the following:
  56. ~ , WC: <ENTER>&  (or whatever your hard drive letter is)    
  57. ~ , WMD \BABYKEYS <ENTER>&
  58. ~ , WCD \BABYKEYS <ENTER>&
  59. m Assuming that BABY KEYS is currently on a floppy diskette in the WA:&    
  60. m drive, type the following from your WC:& drive:
  61. ~ , WA:BKEYS <ENTER>&!

  63. 1 To start "Baby Keys":
  64. 1 WOn a Floppy Disk system:&    
  65. m Place the floppy diskette containing "Baby Keys" in your A or B floppy
  66. m drive.
  67. m Type: WA:& (or B:) W<ENTER>&    
  68. ~ 8 WBABYKEYS <ENTER>&
  69. 1 WOn a Hard Disk system:&    
  70. m Type: WC:& (or D:) W<ENTER>&
  71. ~ 8 WCD \BABYKEYS <ENTER>&
  72. ~ ,  WBABYKEYS <ENTER>&
  73. 1 To exit "Baby Keys", press the W<CTRL><BREAK>& keys together. That is, while    
  74. 1 holding the W<CTRL>& key down, press the W<BREAK>& key. Due to the machine~      7 _______
  75. 1 level nature of some of the graphics displayed on the screen, you may have1 _____
  76. 1 to press W<CTRL><BREAK>& a number of times to stop the program. When you
  77. 1 press W<CTRL><BREAK>&, you should see the message "Do you really want to
  78. 1 quit?". Pressing 'WY&' terminates the program. Pressing any other key
  79. 1 continues the program.
  80. 1 VIII.I WMORE ON "BABY KEYS"&~ 8 ___________________
  81. 1 "Baby Keys" will produce sounds from a list of up to 22 different tones    
  82. 1 (See the file README.TXT file for a list of changes from version 1.0.0).
  83. 1 Along with these sounds, your child will see a random variety of graphical
  84. 1 images displayed on the screen. This includes:
  85. m *1 CIRCLES    
  86. m *1 CONCENTRIC CIRCLES
  87. m *1 DIAMONDS
  88. m *1 ELLIPSES
  89. m *1 RECTANGLES
  90. m *1 SQUARES
  91. m *1 TRIANGLES
  92. 1 You can easily see how your child will not only be entertained, but with ~       > 5 WBaby Keys_ Copyright (C) 1991 - Multi Computing&1 your help educated about different shapes and images that are displayed on1 the screen.    
  93. 1 IX. WSUGGESTIONS FOR USE&m ___________________
  94. 1 For both you and your child to gain the most from "Baby Keys", please    
  95. 1 consider the following suggestions:
  96. m 1)% Always be present when your child is playing the game. You    
  97. ~ , wouldn't want to come back and find missing files on your PC. Or
  98. ~ , worse, grape juice spilled on your keyboard.
  99. m 2)% Make sure your child sits at least 24 inches away from the    
  100. ~ , computer screen and that the keyboard is easily within reach.
  101. m 3)% If your child is beginning to talk, you may want to mention the    
  102. ~ , name of different figures as they appear on the screen. In my
  103. ~ , daughter's case, we have been showing her the clock on the wall
  104. ~ , and mentioning the word "clock". So when she sees the filled
  105. ~ , circles on the computer screen, she looks up at the clock, points
  106. ~ , and says "clock" (or something close to that).
  107. m 4)% Try to avoid letting your child play with the game for more than    
  108. ~ , 20 minutes. As everybody knows, a child's attention span is
  109. ~ , short. Allowing them to play the game for much longer than that,
  110. ~ , may result in their losing interest in it.
  111. m 5)% Try to have a variety of games available for your child. This way    
  112. ~ , they are not playing the same game all the time. There are other
  113. ~ , games similar to this one available on the computer information
  114. ~ , networks (BBS's included).
